P a folate analogue metabolic inhibitor, has been approved as the first maintenance treatment for locally advanced or metastatic nonsquamous non–small cell lung cancer, the Food and Drug Administration announced. “This drug represents a new approach in the treatment of advanced non–small cell lung cancer,” Dr. Richard Pazdur, director of the FDA’s office of oncology drug products, said in the statement. “Typically, patients whose tumors respond to chemotherapy do not receive further treatment after four to six chemotherapy cycles,” he added. Dr. Pazdur referred to a study that showed an advantage in overall survival in certain patients who received maintenance therapy with pemetrexed. Maintenance therapy with pemetrexed was compared with placebo in a multicenter study of 663 patients with ACIP Picks Five Priority Groups for H1N1 Vaccination

Venous Thromboembolism in Critically Ill Cirrhotic Patients: Practices of Prophylaxis and Incidence

Objectives. We compared venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis practices and incidence in critically ill cirrhotic versus noncirrhotic patients and evaluated cirrhosis as a VTE risk factor. Methods. A cohort of 798 critically ill patients followed for the development of clinically detected VTE were categorized according to the diagnosis of cirrhosis. VTE prophylaxis practices and incidence we...

A survey of thromboprophylaxis management in patients with major trauma.

BACKGROUND Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common life-threatening complication of major trauma. Although clinical guidelines clearly suggest routine VTE prevention with low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) in this specific group of patients, there is still a lack of strong recommendations regarding the timing and the modality of heparin administration and the role of mechanical prophylaxis. W...

Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in critically ill patients.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is recognized as a common complication in critically ill patients. Risk factors including critical illness, mechanical ventilation, sedative medications, and central venous catheter insertion are major contributing factors to the high risk of VTE. Because of their impaired cardiopulmonary reserve, PE...
